Başkent Edaş Now Belongs To Enerjisa

Enerjisa has taken over Baskent Elektrik Dagitim A.S., one of the largest electricity distribution companies in Turkey. Having assumed the task of distributing electricity to 3 million customers, Enerjisa aims at enhancing its service quality, thereby rendering Başkent EDAS a utility setting an example for Europe in terms of customer satisfaction and quality of operation.

Enerjisa Elektrik Dagitim A.S., which has been operating as a joint venture of Sabanci Holding, one of the largest industrial and financial groups, and Verbund, Austria’s leading electricity utility, has officially acquired the operating rights of Baskent Elektrik Dagitim A.S.

The handover ceremony where Privatisation Administration President Metin Kilci, Energy Market Regulatory Board President Hasan Koktas, Sabanci Holding Energy Group President Selahattin Hakman, and Verbund CEO Wolfgang Anzengruber were present in person, was attended by Sabanci Holding Chairman Guler Sabanci and CEO Ahmed Dorduncu via live broadcast from Davos.

Sabanci Holding Chairman Guler Sabanci stated that they have realised through Enerjisa, a Sabanci and Verbund joint venture, a first in Turkey by assuming the electricity distribution job in a vast area such as that of Baskent. Saying that they would do their best in order to provide with the best possible service the inhabitants of the provinces covered by Baskent Elektrik Dagitim, with Ankara above all, Sabanci highlighted that their goal was to render a service of European standards in this area. “All my colleagues, with Sabanci Holding Energy Group President Mr. Selahattin Hakman above all, will do their best in sense of responsibility,” Sabanci said. Stating that the transfer of Baskent Elektrik Dagitim A.S. was a highly significant start for the power market, Sabanci extended her thanks to everyone who contributed to such achievement of this process.

Verbund CEO Wolfgang Anzengruber said: “Today’s signing is much more to us than just one step on the ladder of success. It sets one of the key targets in our business plan and sends a strong signal of confidence in Enerjisa to become the leading private power generator in Turkey’s liberalised electricity market.” Stating that they were signing the biggest purchase in Verbund’s history, Anzengruber added: “We acquire a distribution region as big as the whole Austrian electricity retail market. Therefore we have to emphasize once more our commitment to be a reliable and enthusiastic partner to Turkey and to our partner Sabanci.”

In his speech at the handover ceremony, Sabancı Holding Energy Group President Selahattin Hakman underlined that they were aiming at becoming the leader utility in the Turkish electricity sector with an integrated structure encompassing the generation, retailing and wholesale, and pointed out that they were planning to render Baskent EDAS a utility setting an example for Europe in terms of customer satisfaction and operational quality. Stressing once more his belief in the fact that a competitive market would function with all its institutions and rules, Hakman said: “We have demonstrated with the takeover of Baskent Elektrik Dagitim once more our belief in this market, and our commitment to secure our place therein as a leader player.”

Covering an area consisting of Ankara above all, followed by Cankiri, Kirikkale, Karabuk, Zonguldak, Kastamonu, and Bartin, Baskent Elektrik Dagitim A.S. has approximately three million customers.
