Austria’s leading electricity company
 
VERBUND is Austria’s leading electricity company and one of the largest producers of electricity from hydropower in Europe. More than four fifths of Verbund’s electricity are produced by hydro power, supplemented by thermal and wind power. Including its equity interests, VERBUND has more than 4 million electricity customers, and trades in electricity in 20 countries. In Austria, VERBUND operates in the sectors of generation, transmission, trade and retail. In 2010, VERBUND achieved an annual turnover of 3.3 billion Euro with around 3,000 employees.
 
Besides the Austrian market Germany as well as France, Italy and Turkey count among the core markets. Austria’s electricity consumption amounts to approximately 70,000 million kWh of electricity. Around 40 % of this originate from the VERBUND group power plants.VERBUND places great value on sustainability in electricity generation: In Austria and Germany the company operates 123 hydro power plants as well as three thermal power plants and three wind farms. New hydro power projects are in different stages of planning and realization in Austria, the CCGT power plant Mellach in Styria (800 MW) is under construction and will operate from 2012.
 
VERBUND’s transmission activites take place via the independent transmission system operator Austrian Power Grid AG (APG). Austrian Power Grid AG operates Austria’s most powerful high-voltage grid, with the voltage levels of 380, 220 and 110 kV, and handles grid management, maintenance, planning and expansion.
 
VERBUND’s Electricity trade is the interface between generation, distribution and wholesale market and plays a pivotal role for the company. Since July 2005, VERBUND has also been active in the area of direct electricity sales on the Austrian market and has more than 235,000 clients in Austria as well as a 25 % market share in the business customer segment.
 
Internationally successful
Austria’s leading electricity company is actively involved in generation and trade in more than 15 countries and is expanding its role as international player in hydro power. Germany, France, Italy and Turkey count among the core markets.
